And you know what that means… lots of pink ribbons, and lots of reminders to do your self breast exams!
Every woman over 20 should know how to do a proper self breast exam. The best treatment for breast cancer is early detection, so make sure to take five minutes every month to do a good exam.
Pick a day that’s easy to remember like the “first Friday” each month and stick to it!
For all you ladies who’ve had a little surgical enhancement, this is for you too! Remember, breast implants don’t cause breast cancer, or make it harder to detect breast cancer. In fact, breast implants are still the most popular method of breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery.

3 Important Things to Keep in Mind While Watching this Video
- You should be bare chested for your exam. Don’t try to do the exam through your shirt or bra like she does in the video.
- Use concentric circles to make sure you examine the entire breast, and use the same pattern every time so you don’t miss a spot.
- Don’t skip the armpit step. It’s really important to feel those lymph nodes too.

Thanks for reminding ladies (and guys!) to stay on top of their checks all year! My gyn suggests that women perform their monthly exams on the DAY of their birthday each month. So if your birthday is May 29th you would do it on the 29th of each month 🙂
That’s a great point citypretty! It’s really important to find a routine that you can stick with. Doing it on your birthday every month is a perfect way to remember. It’s also important to develop a routine for the exam itself. Do it the same way every time so you can be sure you’re not missing something.
